1. продавать, покупать, торговать из-под полы (in refer, to the illegal sale or purchase of sth.) (to sell, buy sth., trade) secretly, stealthily:

     ♦ Жители Савёлова работали на заводе, а кормились рекой - рыбачили и из-под полы продавали рыбу (Мандельштам 1). The inhabitants of Savelovo worked mainly at the nearby factory, but they got a livelihood from the river by catching fish and selling it on the black market (1a).

2. (to do sth.) furtively, secretly:

- in secret;

- under cover;

- on the sly;

- [in limited contexts] underhanded(ly);

- underhand.

     ♦ Мы видели её [статью] однажды на кафедре, уже жёлтую, с потрёпанными ушами... Она там хранилась, по-видимому, как беспрецедентный случай. Ею гордились, не перечитывая, и кое-кому, из-под полы, показывали (Битов 2). We saw it [the article] once at the department, already yellow and dog-eared. It was apparently being preserved there as an unprecedented case. They were proud of it, although they didn't reread it, and they showed it to a few people on the sly (2a).

     ♦ Роман ["Доктор Живаго"] в рукописи несколько лет ходил в Москве по рукам, официально обсуждался в наших редакциях... В чем же был криминал? Все делалось не тайком, не из-под полы, а открыто... (Гладков 1). The novel [Doctor Zhivago] had been circulating in Moscow in manuscript copies for several years; it had been officially under consideration by Soviet publishers. ...What, then, was so criminal in Pasternak's case? There was nothing secretive or underhand here; it was all done quite openly... (1a).
